It’s time to whistle at work, everyone. Beware the poisonous apples.
First trailer for Disney’s live-action remake Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs It dropped during the big D23 event this weekend, and it has one big problem — or should I say one small problem — one very small problem.
The film stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White, Anse Kabia as the Huntsman, Andrew Burnap as Jonathan (who I think is the prince), and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.
Now, before you watch the trailer, I’ll just say that if Gal Gadot were to ask me in a magic mirror who I think is the most beautiful, I would answer without hesitation, “You, my queen.” But I digress.
Let’s take a look:
Up until now, all we’ve seen of the film, which hits theaters on March 21, 2025, have been stills of Snow White and her dwarf pals. I said at the time that I was happy the dwarfs were actually dwarfs (previous leaked images had some worrying they might not be dwarfs), but that I wish they’d cast real people – specifically dwarfs – rather than animated dwarfs.
This trailer honestly pisses me off. Since this footage was released, especially the new Time Bandit In the Apple TV show, the dwarfs have disappeared entirely.
Apparently, in our current cultural climate, we’re so sensitive to prejudices against concepts like “dwarves” and “halflings” that we’re moving away from casting dwarves in shows and movies. Of course, the irony here is that there are plenty of dwarf actors who would love to be in movies like this one. snow white And shows like this: Time Bandit. To be honest, I’m still a little upset that director Peter Jackson didn’t cast dwarves to play the hobbits. The Lord of the Rings A trilogy. (And of course a very diverse and progressive Power Ring He commits a similar erasure with the Harfoots and the Stoors: a rainbow confederation, to be sure, but one that doesn’t include any midgets as actors. Long live progress!
Some (though certainly not all) of this tendency can be traced back to the most famous LP actor, Peter Dinklage, who commented on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast:
“No offense intended, but I was just surprised. They were so proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, yet they’re telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and think about what you’re doing there. It just doesn’t make sense to me. You’re progressive in some ways, yet you’re telling an *&$*(@#outdated story about seven dwarfs living together in a cave. Am I not doing anything to advance the cause from my platform? I guess my voice isn’t strong enough.”
The irony here is that rather than essentially changing the story and not featuring midgets at all (though I don’t think the midget community would necessarily agree if that was such a harmful stereotype), Disney simply animated the midgets and removed them from the cast entirely. Well, not completely, as we know that midget actor Martin Klebba voices Grumpy, but completely removed them from the screen. And there aren’t a ton of midget roles, especially since so many of them are played by regular-sized people. The only major show with midgets in recent history was Disney’s willow The reboot was mostly daikini and really awful.
Writing for IndieWire, Kristen Lopez said, “If you’re a member of the LP community, or the disability community in general, you’ve probably seen this story before: media frenzy, followed by backlash, and ultimately the complete erasure of disabled people.”
That is certainly true. snow white, “And the Seven Dwarfs” has been removed from the title entirely.
This isn’t good for the LP actors, but also for the film. Frankly, it’s a little jarring to watch these dwarfs in action. Standing next to a live-action Snow White, they’re obviously more lifelike than a deer or a rabbit, but not an actual human (though that’s not the case). a bit (People) This is a pretty big miss by Disney and director Marc Webb. It’s very disappointing overall, but nothing new in the string of mediocre, awful live-action remakes of Disney classics. At least this one looks vibrant instead of the bland, desaturated look most of these movies are given.
