Epson has unveiled a trio of spectacularly bright new home theater projectors that have the potential to revolutionize both the way high dynamic range video is processed and integrated into multipurpose living spaces.
Even the least bright of Epson’s new three-chip Q-series LCD models can put out a blazing 3,300 lumens from its laser lighting system, while the new mid-priced Q models can put out an astounding 6,000 lumens and the flagship models can put out an astounding 10,000 lumens.
As you’d expect with those explosive brightness figures, Epson is targeting its Q-Series trio at the modern luxury home (and its architects, interior designers, and custom integrators) rather than mainstream home theater installations. This is reflected in the pricing, with the QB1000 priced at $7,999, the top-of-the-line 6,000-lumen QL3000 at $14,999, and the flagship 10,000-lumen QL7000 at $29,999.
The Epson Q Series’ entry price may be high, but its brightness figures far exceed those typically found in top-of-the-line home theater projectors. And groundbreaking brightness isn’t the only hallmark of its premium home theater cachet.
Firstly, all three new Q Series models deliver 4K resolution thanks to Epson’s proprietary three-chip 3LCD, temperature-controlled, double micro-lens array technology, and can process high dynamic range images in HDR10, HLG and, a rare addition to the projector world, the HDR10+ format, which adds scene-by-scene image information to the data flow, enabling compatible devices to deliver better HDR images.
The new Q Series models’ incredible brightness allows them to project stunning images on giant screens up to 300 inches, and Epson’s latest QZX image processor is said to deliver that incredible brightness across a wide and accurate color gamut, while still delivering great “black” contrast performance – all elements that help deliver what Epson calls “content the way the director intended.”
The laser light source is rated to last for 20,000 hours of continuous home theater viewing. And gamers will be pleased to know that all three Q-Series models can support 4K HDR gaming at frame rates up to 120Hz thanks to two 40Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports. The QB1000’s HDMI also supports ARC/eARC audio return channel technology, meaning you can send audio to a compatible soundbar or AVR; however, oddly, ARC/eARC support doesn’t seem to be available on the QL3000 and QL7000.
Aside from the difference in brightness performance (valid for both ISO White and IDMS Color brightness measurement methods), the main difference between the QB1000 and its newer QL sibling is that only the QB1000 is actually manufactured with a lens attached. The QL model is compatible with Epson’s family of precision lenses, from short throw to long throw, ensuring home theater enthusiasts get the best lens option for their particular installation.
The QB1000’s integrated lens is a 15-element “VRX” with 3-axis motorized lens shift that supports memory presets, while the QL model two steps up also offers 3-axis motorized lens shift regardless of the lens attached.
All three of Epson’s new Q Series projectors are ISF certified (allowing for full tuning by ISF engineers) and can be integrated into smart home control systems such as Control4, Crestron and PJ Link. All three Q Series models are available in black or white color schemes to suit your décor and preferences.
The Q Series will be shown in public demonstrations for the first time at the CEDIA Expo in Denver (September 5-7), before becoming available for purchase on October 24th through authorized Epson Home Entertainment dealers (backed by Epson’s three-year limited warranty).
“Our new lineup of ultra-premium, high-lumen Q-Series laser projectors demonstrates Epson’s commitment to creating superior entertainment solutions,” said Melvin Diaz, senior product manager, Epson Americas. “Breaking benchmarks in performance, efficiency and size, the Q-Series delivers immersive, big-screen entertainment inside and outside traditional darkened theater spaces, creating endless integration possibilities for home entertainment design.”
