Looking for tips, spangrams, and answers for Thursday’s Strands? You can find them here:
Now, I’ll admit that this is probably the hardest Strands I’ve played since I started playing, but it’s not like the game is that old at this point. Some days it’s like a joke, other days? I’ve been perplexed for a long time, and you here might be too.
How to play with strands
The New York Times Strand Puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta at the moment, so it will only survive if enough people play it every day.
There’s a new Strand game to play every day. The game displays a 6 x 8 grid of letters. The objective is to find groups of words that have something in common. That way you’ll know what the theme is. When you find a theme word, it will be highlighted in blue.
You will also need to find special words called spangrams. By doing so, you can see what the words have in common. Spanggram links her two opposite sides of the board. Theme words cannot be proper nouns, but spangrams can be. If a spangram is found, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Remember: You need to be on your toes at all times.
“Some themes are fill-in-the-blanks; they can also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones,” notes the New York Times. “Just like she changes the difficulty of her Wordle puzzles within a week, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy] Bennett plans to throw Strandsolver curveballs from time to time. ”

What is today’s strand answer?
Spoilers follow. Here are the answers, starting with spangrams and ending with a complete list of all puzzle worlds. This might be a word you need to look up on its own if you don’t know what it actually is.
homonym
This fits from one side of the grid to the other.
I have to say that now I have a complete list of answers that were difficult.
- lament
- horrifying
- logic
- mousse
- Chorus
- dear
- hoarse voice
Yeah, I was pretty lost on this for a long time. The first hint was “WAIL”, but even if I understood from there what the idea was, what the word was that sounded like an animal but was spelled differently, it was still very difficult.
Further clues led to the name MOUSSE, which I kept trying to spell MOUSSE at first. Also, it’s gross. Then we ended up getting other things and Spanggram, HOMOPHONES was literally the last thing we got. It may not have been necessary since the theme was already decided.
I also felt terrible about this incident. If you are too, please don’t feel bad. It happens to all of us.
