I thought maybe I was just being left out this time, but well, that’s just a coincidence. However, as of now, it appears that the review code for Starfield: Shattered Space has not been released.
That’s according to IGN reviews editor Dan Stapleton, who said he was told by Bethesda that the code for the Shattered Space expansion would not be released. My own code request was not answered at all. So there’s nothing to read or scores to analyze until the actual release date on Monday, September 30th.
why? We don’t know that and it’s not being told to the press. This may be due to some technical reason. Or maybe Bethesda will go back to its old ways. That meant giving out no review codes at all for games like DOOM and Prey, a policy that was quickly reversed. Of course, Starfield actually sent me a review code, resulting in a Metascore score of 83. This is considerably lower than previous flagship Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, the lowest of which was Fallout 4’s 87 points, with the others in the 90s.
Shattered Space is an interesting expansion in that it’s meant to sway many users who played the game through Xbox Game Pass into actually paying for the expansion. However, millions of people got the “Total Package” upgrade that came with the DLC ahead of time at launch. Of course, the game was also released on Steam and did well at launch. Unlike other Bethesda games, Microsoft has not announced a date for Starfield to arrive on PlayStation. I think Microsoft sees it as a valuable proprietary IP, so it’s possible, but unlikely, that it will never happen. However, no one knows what they’re up to these days.
Considering this is an expansion and not a complete game, I don’t think the lack of a review code is as big an issue as it would be for a full release. But for something like Shadow of the Erdtree, advance reviews clearly worked. Other games, such as Destiny 2 and its expansion Final Shape, were not reviewed due to their online-focused nature. However, this is not the case in Starfield, which is a single-player game that should be possible.
That’s as well, as I’ve been busy playing Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred ahead of its October 8th release (at least the online nature works as well as the base game) ). So I’ll be playing Starfield live with everyone else at launch and probably publishing a review by the end of the week. It’s weird, but I’m not going to jump to the theory that they’re hiding something.
