Hello everyone! Welcome to the start of a new week. It’s going to be a great week for you all. Or so I feel.

How to play with strands
The New York Times’ Strand The puzzles are a play on the classic word search, and since it’s currently in beta, it will only survive if enough people play it every day.
There is a new game Strand You can play every day. In the game, you’re presented with a 6 x 8 grid of letters. Your goal is to find groups of words that have something in common. You’ll get a hint as to what the theme is. When you find a themed word, it will be highlighted in blue.
You also need to find special words called spangrams, which show what words have in common. A spangram connects at least two edges of the board, but doesn’t necessarily start or end there. Theme words are not proper nouns, but spangrams can be. When you find a spangram, it will be highlighted in yellow.
Each letter appears once in one of the themed words and spangrams. Letters can be strung vertically, horizontally or diagonally and can even switch direction mid-word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double-tap the last letter to submit your guess.
Once you’ve found three valid words of four or more letters that aren’t part of the theme, the Hint button will unlock. Clicking it will highlight the letters that make up one of the words in the theme.
Beware: don’t get carried away! Sometimes you’ll need to fill in missing words in a phrase, and other days the game revolves around synonyms and homonyms. The difficulty level varies from day to day, and the creators of the puzzles may try to surprise you.

The rest of today Strand The theme word is…
- Kombucha
- Kefir
- Kimchi
- Yogurt
- Sauerkraut
- miso
The finished grid looks like this…
This turned out to be a pretty straightforward grid. I immediately spotted KOMBUCHA snaking across the top and assumed I was looking for fermented foods. Sure enough, I spotted MISO on the bottom right. That got me started on my search for the then-obvious Spungrum.
Spungrum has separated the yogurt and sauerkraut, which leaves the kimchi and kefir, and that’s it.
I didn’t use any hints and Spangle was the third theme word I found.
