Last week, I heard people tweeting about the connection between True Detective: Night Country and the beloved OG series, True Detective Season 1. Now, (spoiler) theories like “that ghost is Rust Cohle’s father” are no longer just theories after last night’s second episode.
No more hints or dancing around them. This week, we made it very clear that True Detective Season 4 is a full-fledged sequel to Season 1, with countless connecting parts:
- True Detective season 1’s spiral is everywhere right now. Images of the first series of crimes are tattooed or drawn on the victim’s body. The suspect appears to have carved a giant spiral into the roof of the trailer. This spiral is ancient, said to be “older than ice,” indicating some sort of magical or supernatural origin.
- Last week’s ghost, Travis, was revealed to be literally Travis Cole. Travis Cole is Rust Cole’s survivalist father mentioned in season 1, with whom Rust no longer communicates. It must be some kind of cosmic coincidence that before this, his father was in the very town where the Spiral murders were taking place when Rust was randomly assigned to take on the case. .
- Finally, another major connection was revealed. The lab where the victim scientists worked was said to receive funding from the Tuttle Corporation. The Tuttle family has been the main leader of a child abuse death cult since Season 1 of True Detective, and has now expanded. It’s like an even bigger corporate empire. The lab’s research is said to be trying to find microorganisms in the ice that could stop cells from decaying and potentially treat many currently incurable diseases.
There’s at least some less “supernatural” twists this week, hinting that yes, it might just be a madman who caused this death. In Season 1 of True Detective, Spiral’s “cult” wasn’t particularly supernatural, save for a hallucination at the end, and seemed to just be evil. here? It feels like there’s something mystical and fundamental behind all of this, and that could be the starting point for the series. But it’s too early to tell if that was just in the background or if an actual desire for revenge materialized and killed people. I really hope that’s not the case, but this week gave me some relief in that regard.
I hope there will be more connections with season 1. That season ended with relatively little resolution regarding the death cult, but I think it’s now being explored further with the aim of providing more answers. I’m still thinking about whether I really like it or not.
